President’s Message – March 2014

The Way We Were!!

Memories, light the corners of my mind… can it be that it was all so simple or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would, could we? Misty watercolor memories of the way we were…

Beautiful words from a beautiful song and sometimes, like the song, the stars line up and everything falls into place beautifully. That would be the description of the Annual Lincoln Day Dinner at the Bridge Hotel. The evening was definitely the “way we were” or should I say the “way we should be.”

All three US Candidates for US Senate were in attendance and there was laughter, civil conversation and by comments from those attending – “a very fun evening.” Special guest Lily Stevens Becker was definitely the shining star of the evening. Many things can be said about what Ted Stevens did for Alaska, but nothing can be a better example of him as a man than the wonderful daughter his wife, Katherine, and he raised.

Lily is a successful attorney and proud mom of precious twin girls. It is obvious the last few years of her father’s life affected her professional choices and has left a lasting impact on her as a woman and attorney. Alaska is still very near and dear to her and where she really feels at home. She is helping spearhead the Ted Stevens Foundation and would love to hear from others in what direction that foundation might go.

Another special thanks goes to the LD Committee headed by Ardy Robertson. These ladies worked hard and long to ensure this LD would be one to remember. It was, and our hats off to you – you are the greatest bunch of women I have ever had the pleasure to know or work with and I love you for always making ARWC the best club in the state of Alaska!

Why is ARWC able to have such success within the Republican Party? I have been asked this question many times. My answer is that I believe it is because we strongly support the Republican Party Platform and Party Rules. We do not bend our values. We are not considered moderate, but maybe the more conservative wing of the Republican Party. Agree with us or not, you always know what side of the issue we will come down on and we don’t apologize for our beliefs.
